Character Name: Germany (Ludwig Beilschmidt)
Character Canon: Axis Powers Hetalia
Character Age/Gender: Male, physical appearance is in early 20s, however, as character is representation of a country, his real age is much older. Germany doesn't actually know his real age, but suspects it’s between 150 and 200.
Canon Point: Modern Era
Character Canon History: Real Country History. (Germany's memories only start around the time of the German Confederation)
Hetalia canon takes an anecdotal look at the history of the world using personified countries with thoughts and emotions. Early Hetalia focused on World War II and the Axis Powers, but has expanded from there. What Hetalia tells about Germany is that he's the youngest of an unknown number of brothers who represent the German Nations that developed after the fall of the Roman Empire (of these brothers Prussia is the most well known, Bavaria and Saxony have made minor appearances, and Brandenburg, Hesse, and Holstein have been name-dropped). He was an adult fighting beside his brother in World War I, but seems to take a more following role, looking to Prussia for advice in things. It is during World War I that he encounters Italy, hiding in a tomato crate and takes him as prisoner. In the inter-war period his economy suffers and he loses his sanity constructing cuckoo clocks.
Italy ends up begging Germany for a job during the inter-war period and he has Italy literally making money (illustrating the rise of inflation during the inter-war period and one of the schemes used to try and pay the debt from the Treaty of Versailles). The story picks up with the Pack of Non-Aggression between Germany and Russia as well as forming the Axis Powers (here early Hetalia contradicts real life history and even itself. They show the Non-Aggression Pact being before the formation of the Axis). Hetalia strips of the war period focus on the early forties and the interactions between the Allies and Axis. Most of the Axis strips are of training, with Germany training Japan and Italy, Germany rescuing Italy (in North Africa from Egypt and England, and from Russia at least once), and information gathering missions. Central to the World War II strips are the S.O.S. from the Center of the World series which features Germany, Italy, and Japan stuck on a supposedly deserted island. Sometimes they are attacked by the Allies (to be rescued by the Ghost of the Holy Roman Empire on two occasions in the anime, and Finland delivering presents as Santa Claus on the third) and at least once they discover the island to be inhabited and home to a Chinatown.
Hetalia canon jumps past the later years of the war and doesn't pick up until the modern era. In the current era the countries gather to discuss solutions to problems of worldwide importance, including global warming. They prove to be unable to get along and more focused on fighting each other (America, France, and England), sleeping (Greece), eating (China and Italy), or stalking (Russia and Belarus).
Hetalia specific events have occurred in the modern era. These events do not have basis on world history, but are usually thematic to the holiday. In one event France dresses the nations in fetish wear and goes streaking (April 1st, 2007). In another set of strips Spain pranks everyone on the behalf of France (April 1st, 2008). In a third Prussia takes over the site to host his blog which shows he lives with Germany and that sometimes Germany only tolerates his presence (April 1st, 2009). The latest was a Halloween event (October 31st, 2011) in which Germany initially dresses as a Roman Warrior but somehow ends up in a Roman Slave costume along with several other nations at America's Halloween party.
An Incomplete Timeline of Hetalia as fit into history
Character Personality: Germany has gone through some personality changes over the years, but overall he is a very serious person who often has difficulty expressing himself and understanding other people. The Buon San Valentino strips illustrate the main aspects of Germany's personality well. The strips take place in 1940s Germany where Germany picks up a book to try and understand Italy better. Germany likes to get all of his knowledge from books and becomes flustered when he cannot find the proper book or the information in the book. Once he finds a book that has information on his particular problem, he will do nothing else but study it, even forgoing sleep. He does, however, learn well from the book, and despite Italy's strange behaviors, Germany is able to draw the correct conclusion that Italy considers him a friend. This is not the only time Germany's reliance on books is shown.
Soon after drawing this conclusion it is revealed that Germany is also capable of mistaking the situation by coloring after his own national customs. He is willing to put aside all of his carefully thought out and studied conclusions for a new, radical conclusion. When the shock wears off, though, he thinks about it more rationally, but even one thing in the direction of the new conclusion can confirm it. In the Buon San Valentino strips he questions Italy on the flower gift only to find that Italy's first crush was on a boy (Holy Roman Empire, which may or may not have been a child Germany, it's been hinted at, but never confirmed one way or another. Germany does not remember this time so it does not bear on his personality or history). This leads Germany to conclude that Italy has a crush on him.
This strip also reveals some of the contradictions in Germany's sexuality. Up until this point he only considered girls, but was a complete virgin. Other strips and episodes (one focusing on Germany and Italy being captured by the allies) reveals, however, that he has a collection of very kinky BDSM orientated porn. This is a contradiction since he states he doesn't understand what to do with a guy (and later when questioned about, he reveals not to know what to do with girls). All of this porn he watches, and Germany's practical knowledge of sex seems to be non-existent. The Buon San Valentino strips also imply that Germany's first time is with Austria as an experiment to gain some practical knowledge of gay sex, though this occurs only after Germany spends a week reading through books on dating advice.
More modernly, Germany is comfortable with his sexuality. He has determined that he is attracted to people of both male and female genders and is okay with this on a personal level. He writes in his diary (part of which is readable in the Cleaning Prussia-san game) that he likes the maid cafes in Japan's house (countries refer to their land as their house). He states that he could not handle it for long, but he reflects that the outfits weren't bad. He also does not like that his diary was read, punishing Prussia by ignoring him.
While Germany is capable of following written instructions, he often follows them too stiffly and/or too quickly. This, again, shows a lack of practical knowledge to go along with his book knowledge. It also shows that he takes written things too literally and at face value. He does not know how to pace the instructions or to tailor them to the specific situation. He also has a hard time separating his work mentality to his personal mentality. This might be because of how organized his mental space is, shown as a library with militarized workers holding hearts with emotions on them, questioning where they are supposed to go.
Germany is very organized and clean. This is shown in the Germany part of the Cleaning Prussia-san game. In the game Prussia wants to clean to get praised and offers to clean up for Germany while he's gone, only to be told by Germany that the cleaning has already been done. His cleanliness is highlighted by the fact that there is no dust in the library, a generally dusty place. This might be too much cleaning to the point of overworking. In the meeting of the World strips and episode (first episode of the first season), Germany's need for things to be organized comes out as anger towards his less organized and more rowdy fellow nations. He shouts at them to be quite and sit down and then proceeds to lay out a set of rules in order to get the meeting to continue.
The same episode shows that Germany is very sensitive to some parts of his past, particularly World War 2. "If you're ready [to present] make sure you are prepared and raise your hand, but make sure you do so in a way that does not mock a salute in my country's past," is a line from the dubbed version of the anime. This reflects the real life ban in Germany on things that had to do with the Nazi regime. This sensitivity is brought on by both shame and by a desire to move on.
Germany has difficulty making friends. In World War II he becomes allies with Japan and Italy. He shows admiration for Japan and has very few problems understanding Japan. Italy, on the other hand he states in episode 4 "Then there's that one," followed by a pause in which Italy shouts "Pasta," before Germany repeats "and then there's that one." Germany doesn't seem to truly mind Italy's desire to follow him around or Italy's need for protection. Germany does show desire for Italy to shape up and become stronger. This friendship has lasted into the modern era with Germany allowing Italy to speak as soon as Italy raises his hand, and even prefacing Italy's name with "[Germany's] friend". Despite the length of their friendship, Germany still doesn't understand Italy. He is capable of imitating Italy (You're Italy and I'm Germany) even while making observation diaries to find out more about him (Italy Observation Diary).
A lot of things about Germany's relationship with Italy define Germany's personality as the situations are extreme by Germany's standards. On at least two occasions (Axis Powers Jokes and Italy and Germany's dirty jokes) Italy interrupts Germany in the shower. While Germany shows embarrassment, being naked, he is shown, in the first strips, to be able to function properly after the shock wears off (and covering his bits with a towel). In the second strip he manages to also regain functionality, but only after Italy compares them and Italy finds himself embarrassed by his smaller size.
Germany's desire to learn new things is shown multiple times, but it's called "Germans' Researching Spirit" in The Guns of Germany and Italy, a strip set in World War I. In this strip Germany looks at an Italian gun of the era and it’s manual. He shows that even in World War I that he cannot understand Italy, especially Italian priorities. Though, he is later assured by Prussia that even Germany would appreciate Italy. Germany, even into the modern era isn't sure about that, though it seems to be true. In strips where Germany and Japan go on a diet and Italy becomes worried about their change in behavior (Salted Salmon), it is shown that Italy is the lynch pin in talking them out of such radical changes.
In general, because of his seriousness and organizational abilities, Germany is a very dependable country. So dependable that many nations are relying on him as shown in Germany is playing an impossible game, where he has just about economically annexed Greece and Spain, even while Austria and Italy still rely on him. Even America has come to rely on Germany a bit.
AU Information: Head-canon for the missing years, not yet covered in any Hetalia canon, is based off of real German history.
Character Abilities: Germany, as a nation, is semi-immortal. He does not age the same as normal people do, nor does he die from things that would kill a normal person. Two nations are shown to be deceased in Hetalia canon (Roman Empire and Germania, with another few including Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt being implied as also deceased), so it is possible for them to die, but it is not clear how this occurs (Roman Empire's death seems to have been caused by wounds inflicted by years of war with Germania, but also seems to have occurred after the official fall of the Roman Empire as he was able to raise Italy for some time during the early Middle Ages). Uncommon for nations, Germany also shows great physical strength, at one point lifting a tank which could weigh upwards to twenty tons with only one hand.
Like all nations, Germany has a supernatural connection to his land and people. Things that affect his people or country on a large scale, also affect him physically. An example of this is his state of health, which usually reflects the state of the economy. If he's feeling unwell, that means the economy is doing poorly. He is working extra hard to prevent the cold in the Euro zone from effecting him.
His other abilities are normal human abilities, but his skill in them surpasses most human skill. Only masters that focus their entire lives to one of these abilities could surpass his skill. This is because, as a nation, Germany has many more years to study and learn. He is skilled in armed and unarmed combat; he can use a variety of weapons including blades (mostly swords and knives), rifles, pistols, machine guns (and other rapid fire assault weapons), bombs (including grenades, dynamite, plastic explosives, mortars, various types of artillery, and air-to-surface bombs), and mounted weapons (including tanks and aircraft). He constantly updates his knowledge. He is capable of flying aircraft or piloting a ship, but prefers to stay on land.
He is highly skilled in cooking German cuisine from any part of Germany, though his best efforts are for types native to Brandenburg-Prussia. Since he is weak to book instruction, he can follow and cook any recipe found in any book, though it comes out lacking any of the heart that goes into spontaneous cooking and baking.
He is skilled in mechanics and loves working on cars. Some say the cars from his house are the best made. His cleaning and organizational skills are obsessive compulsive in magnitude.
Character Inventory: Germany will have a pin and a notepad in his pockets, a dirty (BDSM orientated) magazine somewhere on his person, the clothes on his back (a business suit), and an Iron Cross necklace, worn under his dress shirt. The notepad might not have a limit to the number of pages it holds, but otherwise, there are no special abilities to these items.

It was finally here. During a break in the last World Conference, Germany had overheard America's excited ravings about one of Japan's latest anime series. Germany had difficulties understanding America when he was talking quickly and excitedly. But the things he heard peeked his curiosity. What kind of anime could make America happy about the War? At least, he thought that was what America seemed to be saying. Japan was smiling his polite smile, so Germany thought it might be a good idea to interrupt.
Japan had explained about the anime. It was a series that gave an anecdotal look at history. Germany remembered Japan saying that it was his intent to foster a desire to learn history. Germany was determined to research it and determine if he could release it in his house. If it was truly educational then there should be little problem. He wondered how it became so interesting to America, when America did not seem the type to get excited by history.
Germany had to wait for his brother to leave the house to watch it. He felt more need to be clandestine with this then his porn. Why did he have such a guilty feeling from an anime? Perhaps it was because of the subject of this series? Japan had mentioned that most of the plot occurred during World War II. Or maybe it was because of the things he read about it online. Were people shipping Hitler and Mussolini? And what was this about Churchill and Roosevelt? He did not understand the mentality of "fans", perhaps an in depth study is in order after this.
Germany seems to realize that he would never watch the DVD if he didn't open the case or put the DVD in the player. After waiting so long to watch this without Prussia being in the house, was he getting cold feet? No, he was Germany, he would be brave. He opened the case, looking at the shiny disc inside, with colorful graphics covering the top. Swallowing his nervous down heavily, Germany presses his thumb into the release button and gently removes the disc from the case. It's just a DVD, no matter what was on it. If Japan could release it, then it shouldn't be anything too bad. His resolve steadied, he finally puts the disc in to watch it.
